Where the gatehouse is and what remains

Wetheral Priory Gatehouse stands beside a narrow country road in Wetheral, about 6 miles east of Carlisle on the B6263. The red-sandstone structure was the original entrance to the priory precinct, which also contained an outer court, a church and monastic buildings.

Look for traces of rooflines on two sides: they indicate that the gatehouse once formed part of a range that included a chapel and monastic school.

The surviving building has an entrance passage with a porter’s lodge alongside it, a circular stair and domestic chambers with fireplaces and garderobes. The upper chamber’s floor is gone, so the remains give only part of the original layout.

The history of Wetheral Priory

The history of Wetheral Priory

Wetheral Priory began in the early 12th century, when Ranulf Meschin gave the manor of Wetheral to the abbot of St Mary’s, York. The priory was a cell of that Benedictine abbey, with no more than 12 monks and a prior.

English Heritage dates the gatehouse to the 15th century, while Historic England describes it as 14th-century. The priory was dissolved in 1538; the gatehouse later served as a vicarage and then a hayloft before passing into state guardianship in 1978.
